Lofer – Music Education in the Country
In Lofer and Unken, music is brought to life
Lofer is a tranquil community about 45km south of the City of Salzburg. The market town has about 2,000 inhabitants. For many of them, music plays a major role in their lives. A little music story.
As you move away from the City of Salzburg, the sounds of classical musical fade and turn into folk music. Especially in the villages of Lofer, Weißbach and Unken, this kind of music plays an important role. A good part of the population are members of the local music bands and play their sweet music at baptisms and weddings.
The streets of Lofer are almost as historic as those of Salzburg. Old walls, beautifully preserved buildings and winding alleys make Lofer an interesting destination for lovers of architecture. But that is not all. Mozart also came to Lofer during his short life – together with his father Leopold on their way to St. Johann in Tyrol.
On 13th December 1769, just before Christmas, Wolfgang Amadeus and his father Leopold found accommodation for the night with the Guardian of Lofer and his wife. They stayed up until late at night chatting and drinking cocoa, before retiring to a nice room.
Of course, this story is well known in Lofer. Stefanie, a music student from Weißbach, also knows that Mozart once “came through” here. And in order to remind the future generations in Lofer, a marble plaque was affixed to the former Court House. The place where father and son Mozart stayed.
In addition to the musical history of Lofer, this market community is a wonderful starting point for an adventure holiday in the mountains. Surrounded by great climbing and hiking routes, you will spend a wonderful and peaceful time here in Lofer and Salzburg’s Saalach Valley. You can also experience what Mozart experienced for one night of his life.
