Unken – The Home of Herbs
Leopold Mozart and the travel pharmacy
Unken is a town in Salzburg’s Saalach Valley. When you drive through the town, one building in particular jumps out at you – the TEM Centre. This abbreviation stands for Traditional European Medicine and deals with the healing power of plants.
Karin Buchart knows a lot about plants. She is one of the co-founders of the centre, a place dedicated to the research and passing on of herbal medicine. Home-made products are sold in the shop while courses and events are held in the seminar room.
If you ask the expert what Leopold Mozart had in his travel pharmacy when he was travelling with his family, Buchart says: “You can assume that Leopold Mozart had a pitch salve in that time or perhaps some Bloodroot. Today, us herbalists would also have the same with us.”
